London: William Heinemann LTD, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first printing. Publisher's blue cloth binding, with gilt stamping to spine. Very Good. Lightly dust soiled. Light shelf lean, spine cloth a bit faded, foxing to edge of page block. Previous owner gift inscription to front free end paper. Lavender top stain is vibrant. In a Very Good dust jacket with a bit of general wear, light edge wear, foxing to blank verso, and a vertical crease down the spine panel. A much nicer than average survival of this notoriously fragile dust jacket.
Synopsis
I Capture the Castle is Dodie Smith's first novel, and was published in 1948. Smith, who wrote the novel during a sojourn in America, was already an established playwright and later became famous for authoring the children's classic The Hundred and One Dalmatians. I Capture the Castle relates the adventures of an eccentric family, the Mortmains, struggling to live in a decaying English castle in the 1930s. The story is told by Cassandra Mortmain, a bright teenager, through her personal journal.
