Bright,crisp, clean,subject/author's portrait b/w photographic illustrated dw/dj,with b/w+gilt lettering; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Both head+foot of spine/backstrip and 3 of the 4 corners - apart from lower front - are minimally bumped with reciprocal creasing concomitant to dw/dj, book has a very slight lean.Top+fore-edges bright and generally clean; contents bright,tight, clean,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.There is a production fault to pp245-50: where the bottom corners have not been trimmed correctly and have excess paper to them.Looks like the corners were already folded when being trimmed, thus leaving them as they are now.Bright,generally clean,publisher's original,pale beige cloth boards with bright,crisp,stamped black ink letters to spine/backstrip,and immaculate b/w+colour facsimile illustrated endpapers (handwritten song lyrics in notepads & group's associated ephemera).Rear board has a few assumed grease(?) spots otherwise near fine.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,v-vipp+1-314pp [paginated] includes prose & song lyrics extracts,20 chapters,16pp of contemporary,biographical b/w (the majority) + colour photographs,in 2 blocks of 8pp apiece,between pp122/3 and pp186/7 respectively and acknowledgements to last page.Plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages.
Gary Kemp is an actor,musician and composer and was a founder member of the super-group Spandau Ballet.This is his first book.
When you've been in one of the most successful bands of the eighties,hung out with all (and sundry),partied hard,seen friendships break up and break down,gone from art-rock to stadium pop,written a number of certifiably classic songs,found yourself and your bandmates adrift and in court and pretended to be Ronnie Kray for several months,then you've got a story to tell.
It could be the story of a working-class kid disappointed by the guitar he got for Christmas - the previous year's Lunar Module was much better - who went on to use the instrument to make a life unrecognizable to his parents.
Or the story of a teenager who joined the chemically-fuelled,Bowie-fixated, glitterball Soho scene of the late seventies,got up to his tartan waistband in soul music and obscure artistic references,and then ended up playing to millions around the world - not to mention Live Aid.
Or maybe it's the story of what happens when a boy becomes a man and then a husband - a couple of times - and when a son becomes a father,then watches his own parents grow old.
Actually,'I Know This Much' is all of these.Brilliantly written by Gary Kemp in a style that entertains and surprises,it evokes the wonder and strangeness of living at the heart of it all.
