About This Item

New York: McGraw-Hill, 1971. Second Edition. Quarto (27.5cm); woven pictorial cloth boards, stamped in gilt, no dustwrapper; pictorial endpapers; 80pp. Boards yawning, spine internally detached from textblock (preliminaries still intact); minor wear and soiling. Gift inscription on ffep (dated 1973); red ribbon marker intact. Overall Very Good.

This book is a collection of drawings and poetry as done by the youngest inhabitants of Terezín, a Czechoslovakian fortress that was later repurposed by Nazi Germany to house thousands of Jewish prisoners—a cynical "model ghetto" they could show to foreign parties, knowing that it was merely one more stop towards a final destination. Indeed, out of the 15,000 children to pass through Terezín, only 100 survived. This book endeavors to place a personal name and history to each work, and also contains a timeline and catalogs of art and poems.
