About This Item

London: MacGibbon & Kee, 1954. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. Publisher's red boards with gilt lettering to the spine. SIGNED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TOGETHER WITH A CARTOON. The Memoirs of an Old Etonian Trumpeter. A VG+ copy (just a little dustiness to the top edge and a few spots); tipped-in errata slip still present in a VG+ unclipped D/W (lightly age-toned, light soiling to lower panel and a small, closed hole halfway down the rear hinge where it's taken a knock at some point). 1st edition from 1954 that even unsigned seems to be hard to find in collectable condition. There is an undated, but probably contemporary inscription to the FFEP from the author, jazz trumpeter and band leader Humphrey 'Humph' Lyttelton, who also hosted Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue for 35 years. Nice but what makes this copy stand out is the addition, at a later date and dedicated, I presume, to subsequent owners of the book, of a signed cartoon to the half title. Lyttelton was also a cartoonist. A rare title with these attributes (even un-signed copies are uncommon in collectable condition). Photographs/scans available upon request.
