New York: Random House, 1956. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First US Edition. Original glazed paper-covered boards. Light wear to corners of the boards otherwise a VG+ copy in like D/W with light fading to the spine thereof and a small closed tear (with accompanying crease) to the foot of the front panel. Clean, bright first issue D/W with $2.50 price. Rear panel of D/W lists 12 titles. Final endpaper in book lists 11 titles. Inscribed by Dr Seuss on the verso of the front free end-paper: For Jed/ who DOES run/ the circus/ Dr Seuss. With his usual squiggle/flourish above his signature. The recipient of the inscription. Jed [Mattes] was a prominent literary agent who worked for Theodore Geisels (Dr Seuss) long term agent, Phyllis Jackson. After Jackson died in 1977, Mattes took over Geisels representation. Rare, inscribed.

Synopsis

If I Ran the Circus is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, published in 1956 by Random House. Although it is perhaps not the best known of Seuss's books, its title is often used in North American English as a saying for introducing an opinion. Like The Cat in the Hat, or the more political Yertle the Turtle, If I Ran the Circus develops a theme of cumulative fantasy leading to excess. The overt social commentary found in the Sneetches and the Zax demonstrates that Dr.
