Carrighar was an accomplished mid-century naturalist-writer known for her third-person narration that animates wildlife, but doesn't anthropomorphize them. You could call these composite stories, as they're based on her real observations--this book, her third, was written after three years in the field in Alaska--but they're compressed into an almost cinematic narrative (not unlike how how Thoreau compressed two years at Walden into one).
