Angers: Georges Nepueu. Fair. First Edition. Hardcover. Very rare first edition in fair condition in a fine tan folding case with a gilt lettered red leather label. Bound in worn original soft vellum covers with leather laces: pieces missing from spine head & rear corners. Text is tightly bound & is misnumbered on several pages. 2 volumes in 1. [12, 650pp]; [364pp, 1]. Livres I & II go to page 642, but actually there are 650pp. I have collated & the text is complete. Illustrated with historiated letters; head & tailpiece vignettes. Top margin is dampstained, edge chipped, has a few worm holes: it is gradually worn down to right above the text on the last 100 pages: the top line of text on the last page (errata) is affected. A few pages have dampstains on front & lower margins. Has only a front endpaper with handwritten notes. First & last few pages edgeworn. Paul Lacroix, in the Bulletin du Bibliophile, 1861, "tells that a nineteenth century zealot burned the copies he could get to fight against the occult influence of the book" (Bechtel). French text. Occult, Ghosts, Angels, Demons. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1014 pages .

Description:
1696 Hebrew Republic Judaism Judaica Republican Semitism Cunaeus + Angels OccultPetrus Cunaeus was an early 17th-century Dutch scholar whose 'Hebrew Republic' is considered, according to Tuck, "the most powerful statement of republican theory in the early years of the Dutch Republic."(Tuck, 169)
"De Republica Hebraeorum" describes ancient Hebrew kingdoms and portrays it as the model of republican governments. This book was highly influential on the formation of the Dutch Republic, even though Cunaeus foresaw the Dutch government falling just as Rome did. Ultimately, Cunaeus sought for the book to instill tolerance toward 17th-century Jews through the publication of 'Republica.'
This book is curiously bound with Sebastian Schmidt's 'Succinctae & Solidae' – an extremely rare occult work and commentary on angels from the Bible.

Description:
1863 GHOSTS 1ed Discovery Ghouls Occult Spirits George Cruikshank Caricature ArtGeorge Cruikshank was one of the most prolific book illustrators of 19th-century England. His caricature illustrations most famously appeared in some of the works of Charles Dickens. He regularly depicted English life and satirized politics and social customs, especially slavery and abolitionist reforms. Being disturbed by the American spiritualist and séance fad going around he applied his satire to the idea of ghosts claiming that clearly it was all a hoax as ghosts always appear clothed and for that to be true clothes would have to be a part of the soul, which can only be absurd.
This 1863 first edition includes 9 black and white woodcuts of varying sizes throughout!

binding is very clean- just a touch of edgewear/shelfwear. They used a two tone quarter green cloth over gray cloth and the green portion still is glossy. Internals very clean ( not even any pricing marks in pencil) though there is a paper clip indentation at the lower edge affecting the title, onwards for 20 pages. Unclipped wrapper has only some rubbing but I detect no tears, creases or chips. The paper is wonderful; it strikes me as feeling and looking like "linen" (not your business/office grade) but I am by no means an expert on paper. This US Stackpole Edition omits 8 plates which are in the UK Allen & Unwin volume. Well-preserved, excellent copy.Inv. # 63672 NOAB* bds 9/2023
