An account of SOE operations in Crete during WWII,focusing on the audacious capture General Heinrich Kreipe,a plan masterminded and carried out by the author and Paddy Fermor. The book was originally completed in 1945 but not published for a further five years due to censorship concerns. Moss (1921-65) SOE agent,is best remembered for the capture, with Paddy Leigh-Fermor,of General Heinrich Kreipe on Crete and abduction of him to Egypt in April and May 1944.This is a classic account by one of the officers who took part in one of the great escapades of WWII.In 1943 W.(Billy) Stanley Moss and Patrick Leigh Fermor, both serving with Special Forces in the Middle East, decided on a plan to kidnap General Kreipe,Commander of the Sevastopol Division in Crete, and bring him back to Allied occupied Cairo. This is the story of their adventures, working with a fearsome band of partisans,as they daringly capture the General in an ambush and struggle to evade pursuing German troops in the mountainous Cretan landscape to reach their rendezvous for evacuation to safety.Their exploits are commemorated in the War Museum on Crete. The Folio Society's formula for success is publishing books with exceptional typography, illustrations, paper and bindings. The Society sources new introductions from literary experts to accompany classic texts and uses skilled designers and master printers to produce memorable fine books.Fiction and non-fiction titles are published. The Folio Society also prides itself on producing series of an author's works which regular publishers might not think economic - in several cases it is only possible to acquire forgotten books by major writers in Folio Society editions.
