Description:
1842 William Paley Natural Theology Christian Apologetics Science Philosophy
A scarce printing of William Paley's famous Christian apologetics work, 'Natural Theology'. A scientific and philosophical treatise, this title is commonly referenced amongst scholars when discussing the history and development of the modern understanding of scientific evolution. Significantly influenced by naturalist John Ray's work, Paley further developed Ray's ideas by proposing that the oft-observed complex adaptations seen in plants and animals were evidence of benevolent divine design. Notably, this work is also the origin of the "watchmaker analogy" a now, well-known, and commonly used teleological argument.
This rare, illustrated edition includes the highly-desired companion collection of 40 engraved plates by James Paxton that were originally independently published in 1826.

1715 Blaise PASCAL Pensees Christian Apologetic Pascal's Wager French Philosophy
"Men despise religion. They hate it and are afraid it may be true. The cure for this is first to show that religion is not contrary to reason, but worthy of reverence and respect. Next make it attractive, make good men wish it were true, and then show that it is."
– Pascal, Pensees
Blaise Pascal's thoughts, organized as "Pensees," were written as a collection of writings on theology and philosophy. 'Pensees' was a culmination of all of Pascal's non-mathematic discoveries and ideas which ultimately led him to a life of religious asceticism. He defended Christianity in this work. In doing so, it 'became one of the most famous Christian books in history.' (Keller, Gospel Coalition). 'Pascal was aware that, very often, we see only what we want to see' (Morris, 145) and because of that, he hoped to be able to 'convince man to overcome the natural reluctance many feel toward religion.' 'Our Wild Indians' is a fascinating late 19th-century account of the lives and customs of Native American Indians written by Richard Dodge, a military aide to General Sherman. This book is a broad discussion of practices and lifestyles witnessed by American military figures such as:
• self-torture and scalping
• stagecoach ambushes
• mysterious Indian medicine and sacred rituals
• descriptions of Indian teepees
• gambling and drunkenness in Indian cultures

Dodge outlines the differences between the customs of the 'white man', and those of the Apache, Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Kiowa, and Comanche people. William Tecumseh Sherman supplemented this first edition with an introduction, giving authority to the work and descriptions of Indians.

1880 Spiritualism 1ed Immortality OCCULT Ghosts Evil Spirits Medium Heaven Hell
"Immortality, and Our Employments Hereafter," by James Martin Peebles offers an interesting, 19th-century exploration into the mysteries of the afterlife. Drawing from his backgrounds as a physician and an active member of Psychic/Spiritualist communities, Peebles addresses pressing questions that have long occupied the human mind: What awaits us after death? Will we reunite with our loved ones? How do spirits occupy their time in the hereafter? The book claims to grant a platform for various spirits to share their accounts and experiences from different realms. It delves into the nature of life, death, and the eternal soul, examining the intricacies of existence both on Earth and in the spiritual world. Peebles presents these narratives, not just as testimonies, but also as a way to provide clarity and hope for readers yearning for insights about the great beyond. Amidst the accounts, Peebles also touches upon the eternal… Read More

"American Naval Battles" is an extensive historical account of the United States Navy's engagements from its inception in 1794 up to the time of the book's publication. This comprehensive work, initially released anonymously but later attributed to Horace Kimball and B. Badger, chronicles the naval conflicts involving the U.S., including early skirmishes with France and Tripoli, the War of 1812 against Great Britain, confrontations with Algiers, and the notable battles of New Orleans and Baltimore. The narrative is supported by 20 detailed, full-page engravings depicting key ships and moments of American naval warfare. The book describes the origin of the Navy, significant battles, and operations in various theaters such as the Mediterranean, and the evolution of naval strategies and ship design over the years, all while providing insights into the lives and actions of prominent naval figures.

Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
