Brown pebbled cloth binding (backstrip), tan stiff printed cardstock wraps. Oblong format, approx. 10 3/4" x 14 3/4". Modestly foxed and soiled covers, a bit rounded at corners. Front and rear blanks (flyleaves) are somewhat foxed, but the interior is generally clean, albeit a bit toned, with minor soiling in a few spots and off-setting on the verso of each plate. Facsimile republication of the original 1 May 1827 edition self-published by Cruikshank (22 Myddelton Terrace, Pentonville) and sold by Js. Robins & Co., Paternoster Row. 7 pp., consisting of engraved title page + 6 engraved plates, each composed of a central vignette surrounded by 4-6 smaller illustrations in the corners, for a total of 35 illustrations (not including the illustration occupying most of the title page) punning on the concept of time.…

First edition, first issue. Oblong folio (11 1/8 x 15 1/2 inches; 283 x 394 mm.).
Engraved vignette title page and six hand-colored engraved plates with multiple images showing thirty-five humorous scenes. The second plate is watermarked "Whatman, Turkey Mill, 1826" (Cohn's copy was watermarked 1827, and Abbey's copy was watermarked 1828). All of the tissue guards are watermarked "S O 1823" (as per Cohn).
Publisher's pink printed wrappers (corresponding with Cohn's copy), the front wrapper with the statement "Price 8s. Plain, 12s. Coloured, and large paper India Proofs, 15s." The back wrapper with "Lately Published; Phrenological Illustrations by George Cruikshank... At the latter end of the year will be published Four or Six Prints on the same subject as the present Work." Neatly rebacked at an early time, front wrapper with edge-tears and two small pieces torn away (not affecting text), lower wrapper with a three and a half inch repaired tear on the lower margin, lower corner torn away (not affecting any text). The vignette title-page is a little worn and stained at the fore-edge (not affecting text or image) and there are a few small edge tears to the last three plates. There is some foxing to the tissue guards - but the plates are quite clean and fresh. Housed in a later gray cloth clamshell case, lettered in black on front. An excellent example of a very scarce book in it's original printed wrappers.
"There is a TIME for all things" is balanced (perhaps overbalanced) by the darker and larger legend, "Tempus edax rerum." [Time, devourer of all things]... These illustrations speak to two related themes: the misuse of the present, figured as concentrating on the illusory instead of the actual, and the inevitable declension of life from promise to impoverishment." Inserted at the front is an 4-page octavo catalogue of "New Publications," as issued. The book was issued with the plates plain (as here), colored, or with India proofs. The first issue has tissue guards watermarked with "S.O. 1823", 4 of the plates watermarked "Whatman 1827," and with the ad on the back wrapper reading: "Lately Published. Phrenological Publications ... At the latter end of the year will be published four or six prints..." Cohen 179: "The book was frequently reissued."
