Octavo 155x110mm near contemporary vellum gilt ruled (ties lacking), All Edges Rouge. Some marks on vellum & small pipe ash damage to 1st few pages, else clean and crisp throughout, 454pp + privilege leaf dated 1709. Two small holes to blank endpaper & titlepage leaving the attributed name as G*RSO*E (privilege leaf mentions Gerson also). Some edge dusting but mainly to endpapers and first and last pages. Print very clear and legible. *In original arguments about authorship of this famous devotional book, which now is firmly established to be by A'Kempis, Constantino Gaetani (1560-1650) held that it was by Giovanni Gersen (1363-1429), and this was the official Catholic Church view under Innocent X, who was elected Pope in the year this edition was published. One previous edition (1616).

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
