The Importance of Being Earnest. A Trivial Comedy for Serious People by Wilde, Oscar - 1910

London: [Methuen], 1910. Wilde's "trivial" play is one of the high spots of the modern theatre. First printed in 1899; this is a Very Good copy of a specially-printed Presentation copy Green cloth binding, ruled and titled in gilt, with the notation on the front cover: "Presented by Mr. George Alexander As a Souvenier of His Twentieth Year of Management of the St. James's Theatre February 1st, 1910." A scarce title thus. Sir George (he was knighted in 1911) as an actor/manager was responsible for the first stage productions of both "Earnest" and "Lady Windermere's Fan." This issue is LIMITED to 1200 copies. Very Good condition. Green cloth binding, titled, ruled, and decorated in gilt. Clean text; xv, 181 pages; top edge is gilt, others rough-cut. The Preface is by Robert Ross (1869-1918), Wilde's friend and literary executor. Text has occasional spotting but mainly is very bright and clear. Slight lean; very mild rub to tips and head of the spine; a bit of mottling on the lower front cover.A solid copy of this interesting cultural artifact. In an archival plastic protector.. First Thus.
