[New York]: (The Harbor Press), 1933. Hardcover. Octavo. 15 pages. Near Fine. A few tiny extremity rubs.. The true first edition of FDR's first Inaugural Address. He made a number of last-minute changes to the text after it had already been delivered to the Government Printing Office for printing, and even then deviated somewhat from his amended typescript as he was delivering the address. This privately printed Harbor Press version is a stenographic transcript taken as FDR delivered the speech, making this its first book appearance as listeners actually heard it. FDR's first inaugural contains one of his most famous quotes, "So first of all let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself..." The Harbor Press edition was issued in three different states, all of which are rare. The first state consisted of approximately 10 unnumbered copies bound in scarlet calfskin for presentation to FDR, James A. Farley, Louis Howe, and others. The second state, to which the present volume belongs, was limited to 30 unnumbered copies bound in white star-patterned pale green paper over boards with plain black unlettered cloth spine, white paper title label laid onto front board, lettered in black with decorative rule border. The title page and first text page are printed in black and brown, remaining pages in black only. Printed from Janson types on ivory toned, laid, Worthy Hand and Arrows paper. Designed by John S. Fass for Roland Wood. Issued without a dust jacket. The third state was issued in 150 copies, hand sewn, in gray wrappers. HALTER T547.
