This is a hidden gem. Please bear with me here. The author of this book, John Frost, was a notorious copyright violator and all around literary hack. Turns out this is good 170 years later. He and his publisher took this mediocre book and made it great by stealing 7 plates from Karl Bodmer's work in "Travels in the Interior of North America" by Prince Maximilian. Of the 15 or more editions of "Indian Wars" these fabulous plates are found only in the 1851 Gihon edition. Wagner-Camp 76:3 describes Bodmer's work as "unsurpassed in artistic quality, skill of rendering, and in detail." Howes M443 calls them "the most beautiful, faithful and vivid ever produced depicting western plains and Indians." The pilfered plates here are one of the few ways to afford a Bodmer print from that time period. Condition of the volume is Good: recased using original boards and spine, new endpapers. Interior has smudging and stains throughout. Pagination is wonky: frontis, 1/2 title, frontis, 1/2 title, (5)-328, 7 unpaginated color plates by Bodmer. There is a color half title by Chapman also unique to this edition. A collectible book. See Field 1088; OCLC: 1103249466. Feel free to inquire. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: the plates here are not without flaws but are generally pretty good. I have images of all of them for those who are interested. I have also prepared a summary of "Indian Wars" editions for the terminally curious.

Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

1858 London hardcover. First edition. Volume has undergone repairs: recased using original red boards with sympathetic new leather spine; new endpapers. Interior has moderate foxing, smudges and wear but nothing vandalized. Paginates: [6], (1)-239, errata slip plus 6 unpaginated plates. Complete as issued except for blanks. Numerous engravings in text. Uncommon true first. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: although classified as fiction what the author is doing is relating facts about recent world travels in a style designed to appeal to youth. Includes instruction on use of scientific instruments by travellers - an idea adopted not long after by The Royal Geographical Society in "Hints to Travellers" - so maybe this book is not 'juvenalia' as one might be led to believe.

First edition pamphlet, circa 1892. Condition is Very Good: Some toning around edges of wraps. Small chips, small closed edge tears and minor corner wear on some pages. Staples with some rust. No interior writing or vandalism. Pages are bright. Wraps are attached but delicate especially in front. Paginates: wraps, (1)-32. Somewhat uncommon pamphlet. WorldCat locates approximately 20 physical copies. See OCLC: 166586224 and 2599901. See McDade (Annals of Murder) 6. This pamphlet has two laid in adverts for another pamphlet "Life, trial, and confession of Sawtell" (AKA: Trial of Isaac Sawtell; AKA: History of the Murder of Hiram Sawtell by his brother Isaac Sawtell. McDade 852.) The laid in ads are the most ephemeral of ephemera. A collectible item in like condition. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Although author and date are not present one may make an educated guess. Murder was committed November, 1891 with trial shortly thereafter. These pamphlets would have been published at…

Description:
1886 hardcover by Fishkill Times, New York. Reprint of the 1828 first edition with an "Additional Appendix." I have compared this with the 1828 original and the text is the same while the plates are different. Condition is a mixed bag. At some point this volume was recased using original boards and it was expertly done. Boards show more than the usual stains. Interior is much better: has gift inscription dated 1929 and no other writing. Publisher was newspaper and the materials used are consistent with that. Paper is thin and now slightly brittle. Title page and table of contents both show small closed edge tears. Endpapers and plates are published on a delightful variety of colored papers: endpapers are salmon, plates are on yellow, pink and blue paper. Text is printed in columns like a newspaper article. Binding is tight and was probably resewn. Paginates: blank, (i)-xi, (12)-152, blank, includes frontis and 3 unpaginated plates. Numerous other plates inserted in text. All original, nothing added or…
