This is a hidden gem. Please bear with me here. The author of this book, John Frost, was a notorious copyright violator and all around literary hack. Turns out this is good 170 years later. He and his publisher took this mediocre book and made it great by 'borrowing' 7 plates from Karl Bodmer's work in "Travels in the Interior of North America" by Prince Maximilian. Of the 15 or more editions of "Indian Wars" these fabulous plates are found only in the 1851 Gihon edition. Wagner-Camp 76:3 describes Bodmer's work as "unsurpassed in artistic quality, skill of rendering, and in detail." Howes M443 calls them "the most beautiful, faithful and vivid ever produced depicting western plains and Indians." The pilfered plates here are one of the few ways to afford a Bodmer print from that time period. Condition of the volume is Good: recased using original boards and spine, new endpapers with one leaf old endpapers front and back. Paper edges marbled. Interior has smudging and stains throughout. Gift inscription dated 1852 on front blank. Pagination is wonky: color 1/2 title, title, 2nd 1/2 title, frontis, inscribed endpaper, 2nd frontis, (7)-328, old blank, 7 unpaginated color plates by Bodmer. There is a color half title by Chapman also unique to this edition. A collectible book. See Field 1088; OCLC: 1103249466. Feel free to inquire. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: the plates here are not without flaws but are generally pretty good. I have images of all of them for those who are interested. I have also prepared a summary of "Indian Wars" editions for the terminally curious. More Notes: I have 2 copies of this on offer. This one has somewhat less worn boards, 1852 gift inscription, slightly better edge marbling.

Description:
First American edition of this book. Published by T. Allen, New York, 1792. Binding is fine. Modern half leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. Interior is very good. Has a few stamps from New York Mercantile Library. Edges show foxing, interior is toned, occasional old creases, no vandalism, writing or other issues. Pages remain supple. Lacking old blanks, otherwise complete as issued. Lee was a British born career military officer who sought to lead the Continental Army in place of Washington. Lee is most famous now for his various hasty and leisurely retreats including being captured in his night gown by the British in 1776. After a prisoner exchange in 1778 Lee resumed command only to be court-martialled a few months later for insubordination. He must have had something going for him because he survived 30 years of military encounters where strategic withdrawal was not always an option. One of those characters that would be hard to imagine if he did not actually exist. See Howes L85. A… Read More

1858 London hardcover. First edition. Volume has undergone repairs: recased using original red boards with sympathetic new leather spine; new endpapers. Interior has moderate foxing, smudges and wear but nothing vandalized. Paginates: [6], (1)-239, errata slip plus 6 unpaginated plates. Complete as issued except for blanks. Numerous engravings in text. Uncommon true first. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: although classified as fiction what the author is doing is relating facts about recent world travels in a style designed to appeal to youth. Includes instruction on use of scientific instruments by travellers - an idea adopted not long after by The Royal Geographical Society in "Hints to Travellers" - so maybe this book is not 'juvenalia' as one might be led to believe.
