London: William Heinemann, 1915.. 1st edition. Introduction by Dr Oscar Levy, Editor of the Authorised English Version of Nietzsche's Works. Pp.xvi/218/2(ad for Gobinaeu's 'The Renaissnce', inscribed by Oscar Levy (to one of his collaborators on his 18 volume translation of Nietsche)"To my brave friend Herman Scheffauer with respects, compliments and kind regards, Geneva, Nov.1st 1915. Oscar Levy". Occasional marginal spotting, toning to endpapers. Grey cloth, gilt title to spine, edge wear particularly to top and tail of spine, sunning to spine. A scarce book with an interesting provenance. G+.**" Count Joseph Arthur de Gobineau (14 July 1816 13 October 1882) was a French aristocrat who was best known by his contemporaries as a novelist, diplomat and travel writer but is today most remembered for developing the theory of the Aryan master race and helping to legitimise racism by scientific racist theory and racial demography. Gobineau was an elitist who, in the immediate aftermath of the Revolutions of 1848, wrote a 1400-page book, An Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races, in which he claimed that aristocrats were superior to commoners and that they possessed more Aryan genetic traits because of less inbreeding with inferior races (Alpines and Mediterraneans). Gobineau's writings were quickly praised by white supremacist, pro-slavery Americans like Josiah C. Nott and Henry Hotze, who translated his book into English but omitted around 1000 pages of the original book, including those parts that negatively described Americans as a racially mixed population. Gobineau's writings were also influential on prominent anti-Semites such as Richard Wagner, the Romanian far-right politician professor A. C. Cuza and leaders of the Nazi Party, who later edited and re-published his work."(wiki).** "Oscar Ludwig Levy[1] (28[citation needed] March 1867 13 August 1946) was a German Jewish physician and writer, now known as a scholar of Friedrich Nietzsche, whose works he first saw translated systematically into English. His was a paradoxical life, of self-exile and exile, and of writing on and (as often taken) against Judaism. He was influenced by the racialist theories of Arthur de Gobineau".(wiki).** "Herman George Scheffauer (born 1876 in San Francisco, US; died 1927 in Berlin), was a German-American poet, architect, writer, dramatist, journalist and translator.... In London he was a close friend of Oscar Levy, the editor of the first complete edition of Nietzsche's Collected Works (19091913) and contributed many English translations of Nietzsche's poems...Increasingly concerned about the anti-German riots in England and his "furrin" looking name, as well as having already received a visit from a Scotland Yard detective to his house, he left London with his wife for Berlin via Amsterdam in March 1915. He wanted to familiarize himself with the circumstances in Germany and "better orientate himself" so that he could write more convincingly, and was seriously considering returning to America. However, after finding a flat in Berlin-Friedenau he was soon appointed editor of the pro-German American newspaper The Continental Times. ...He was a friend and colleague of Sir Roger Casement in Berlin who also wrote for the newspaper.".(wiki) .
