This is a very representative copy of the 'Centenary Edition' of the poetry of Robert Burns. Bound by the famous Bayntun (Riviére) bindery in Bath in decorative half leather and cloth covered boards. The spines have five raised bands, gilt lettering on morocco labels and gilt tooling to compartments. Top edges gilt. Bindings remain generally clean, some ligth surface streaks to leather on some boards. Joints rubbed,some cracking mainly to upper joints resulting in a little movement to boards, others remain firm. Five pages have a small tear to the fore edge of the page, without any loss, otherwise a lovely bright clean copy in a fine, attractive leather binding by Bayntun of Bath. Full red polished calf. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments decorated in gilt. Blue and green labels, ruled and lettered in gilt. Double gilt ruled border on boards. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A wonderful copy of this scarce and beautifully illustrated edition.

Hand-coloured plates including costumes, professions & trades, with children, animals, coaching scene, ships/boats, boxing etc.. 2 VOLUMES gilt tan roan (edges worn/spine of vol.2 lacks top compartment and much of the raised bands of vol.2 are missing their leather covering) All edges marbled. Frontispiece + xc (which incl.titlepage) +72pp Vol.2 frontispiece + v (which includes title) +140pp + [4]pp of publisher's Spanish works. Book plate to pastedown with coat of arms of Earl of Portsmouth. Text in Spanish but plates all captioned only in English and the colouring is original and well done. Both text and plates are in clean condition, no writing no tears and with the tissue guards in place and very minimal foxing to a very few pages. The publisher, Ackermann, lists these books as being sold through his own establishments in Maxico, Columbia, Buenos Aires, Chile, Peru, & Guatemala these volumes were obviously written for the South American trade.

Fine example of Riviere and Son binding in exceptional condition (see image). Full deep red morocco with gilt rule to boards; 5 raised bands and intricate gilt detailing to spine. Gilt ruled edges; intricate inner dentelles; all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece (with tissue guard) and 15 aquatint hors-texte plates throughout. Includes an advertisement page after title page stating this book would have been released earlier, but "impediments" and the plates delayed its release. There is also included a section for Notes and Errata. Without previous owners' names or other markings. 259 pp., [1]. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches.

1881 George Cruikshank Comic ART Almanack Caricature Thackeray Illustrated Humor

George Cruikshank was one of England's best and most notable 19th-century caricaturists and book illustrators.

The 'Comic Almanack' is a collection of 19th-century tales and poems etched by George Cruikshank. This work includes the works of famed authors such as Thackeray, Albert Smith, the Brothers Mayhew, Robert Brough and Gilbert A'Beckett.
"In 1835 Cruikshank issued the first number of the 'Comic Almanack,' with a dozen 'right merrie' cuts (etchings) 'pertaining to the months' by himself, and a few minor embellishments. Sometimes the letterpress was supplied by distinguished contributors. To the issue for 1839 Thackeray contributed 'Stubb's Calendar, or the Fatal Boots,' to be followed in 1840 by 'Barber Cox, and the Cutting of his Comb,' afterwards called 'Cox's Diary.'" (DNB).
This undated edition contains hundreds of illustrations, many of which are folding.
