with his name and titles in French and a note in his small precise hand in Italian, with translation, thanking his correspondent for their letter of the 27th June "with its enclosed postal order", 1 side 2½" x 4½", Berlin, 2nd July Pacelli was appointed Nuncio to Bavaria in 1917 (there was none to Prussia or the German Empire) towards the end of WWI, working hard to promote the Vatican peace initiative. When this failed, he concentrated on humanitarian work. In 1920 his nunciature was extended to the whole of Germany, moving to Berlin in 1925, where he was the doyen of the diplomatic corps. Among his many initiatives were secret negotiations with Russia and sending food shipments there. He left Berlin on 10th December 1929 to become Vatican Secretary of State. Pius XII was accused of being Pro Nazi during the second World War, but he was also responsible for saving many Jewish people. (Translation) Monsignor E. Pacelli Archbishop of Sardis Apostolic Nuncio sends cordial greetings and lively thanks for your courteous letter of the 27th June last past with its enclosed postal order. Berlin, 2nd July 1929.
