An early (1997) draft manuscript of Cohen's book Intervening in Africa: Superpower Peacemaking in a Troubled Continent published by St. Martin's Press in 2000. As the Cold War faded, Ambassador Hank Cohen, President George Bush's Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, engaged in aggressive diplomatic intervention in Africa's civil wars. In this revealing manuscript Cohen tells how he and his Africa Bureau team operated in seven countries in crisis - Angola, Ethiopia, Liberia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia and Sudan. He candidly characterizes key personalities and events and provides a treasure trove of lessons learned and basic principles for practitioners of conflict resolution within states. Contents: Formulating a New US Policy for Africa In the Waning Days of the Cold War; Angola; Ethiopia; Liberia; Sudan; Rwanda; Mozambique; Somalia; Superpower in Africa: Mediator or Meddler?

1873. Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward, 1873-1879, regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad, which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 (Sept. 5 and Dec. 5, 1873) are from Jos. H. McKeehan, an attorney in Philadelphia, who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 (Dec. 18, 1873) is from the Village Record, a newspaper in West Chester, Pa., with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 (Nov. 26, 1875) is from John Smith of Ridley Park, about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

South Royalton, Vermont: Steerforth Press, 1996. Trade Paperback. First Paperback Edition (stated). Fine. Interior pristine. Spine straight, tight, and uncreased. Slight reading wear to lower corner. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. 436 pages. For a few years in the early 1960s the CIA seemed to be running a perfect covert war in Laos - quiet, inexpensive, just enough arms to help Meo (Hmong) tribesmen defend their home territory from the communist Pathet Lao. Then the big American war next door in Vietnam spilled across the border. How the perfect covert war ballooned into sorrow and disaster is the story Roger Warner tells in Shooting at the Moon, awarded the Cornelius Ryan Award for 1995's Best Book on Foreign Affairs by the Overseas Press Club. Warner describes his characters with a novelist's touch - soldiers and diplomats busy with war-making; CIA field officers from bareknuckle warriors to the quiet men pulling strings in the shadows; and above all the Meo as they realized… Read More

"Wolfwatching" was Hughes' 14th collection of poetry - he digs deeply into his own childhood and his family history, as well as writing about nature's violence and the meaning he finds in it. Included in the collection is the poem "The Black Rhino" written for the purpose of raising funds to save this endangered animal. The Library Journal considered reading Wolfwatching was "like visiting a zoo envisioned by Hieronymus Bosch: we're caught between fright and fascination". He was married to the American poet Sylvia Plath until her death in 1963. Ted Hughes is considered one of England's finest modern poets - winning the Whitbread Book of the Year in two… Read More

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1983. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Unrevised, Uncorrected Proofs in plain, mustard-yellow wrappers. Kincaid's first book, a collection of short stories. Uncommon in this format, and in excellent condition other than what was done to it in FSG's mailroom: a small photocopy of the dustjacket copy proof, with ISBN, publication date, and price, was taped to the inner front cover. Once FSG would get these proofs from Crane Duplicating Service, they'd put an ink stamp on the cover in which they would fill in the price and publication date, which they did here in red ballpoint pen.
