EDINBURGH: W H Lizars, S Highley et al, 1840 A very good copy of the first edition in the original publisher's cloth binding, which has been rebacked relaying most of the spine. With volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Baron de Geer; hand coloured vignette title page of insects; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Swammerdam; Memoir of De Geer; text with black and white illustrations; and 36 plates bound at the rear of which 31 are hand coloured. The plates are numbered to 37, with no 35 -36 - this was an error noted in the errata at the end of the contents pages - the plate number should be 35 because there is a plate 12 and a 12*. The binding is tight and sound and the boards have light fading to edges. Corners with light wear - top front corner with a bump. The original green endpapers have been retained with repair at the joints. The front pastedown has the bookplate of Francis Hemming, the noted entomologist. Text and plate pages have light toning and occasional old corner turn to the text. The plates are very well coloured with some offsetting to tissue guards. A nice clean copy.
