London: Longman, Rees, Orme, rowne, Green & Longman, 1833. Fourth edition ('Greatly enlarged'). Octavo. 16 (publisher's ads), xxxvi, 589, [1] pp. With engraved frontispiece of Niagara Falls and eight plates (four of which are fold-out and one of which is in color). Modern quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt spine lettering, salmon endpapers. Discreet stamp to title and recto of frontispiece. A clean and complete copy of this classic in geology. Bakewell's book was probably the most widely read of the British geology textbook during the early 1800's; Charles Lyell was drawn to geology as a result of reading this book. "BakewellÕs parentage and birthplace are not known, although he may have come from Nottingham. He was not related to Robert Bakewell (1725-1795), the celebrated Leicestershire husbandman with whom be has often been confused. That he became interested in science, particularly geology, about the middle of his life perhaps explains the emphasis in his works on presenting science to his readers in clear, simple language, scorning merely technical distinctions and abstruse vocabulary. He wrote for the general reader but without undue popularization. During much of his life he lived in London, working as a mineralogical surveyor and teaching mineralogy and geology" (EB). This copy belonged to John Sinkankas, internationally known mineralogist, gemologist, lapidary, bookseller, author and illustrator. With his bookplate on front pastedown. He bound the book as well with his binder's sticker on rear pastedown,
