About This Item

Trade paperback. A little shelf wear and a minor stain on the upper right corner of the first 100 pages or so, does not reach the text. 581 pages are tight, bright and intact. Originally published in 1952, this novel tells the story of what it was to be Black in a country where black people were invisible. Invisible Man is the story of several passages in a young man's life -- from the deep south to the streets of Harlem, from living on his knees to standing defiantly on his feet, from a fearful denial to a passionate embrace of his own blackness.

Synopsis

Even though Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man is sometimes featured on banned books lists, it remains a consistent staple on many high school reading curriculums. In the novel, Ellison laments the feeling of hopelessness and invisibility that many Black men experience in the United States, and it elegantly explores the themes of racism and bigotry in ways that are both unsettling and accessible.
