London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1960. Hardcover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1960 (first English edition)/ 1935. Octavo, 208 pages. Black papered boards lettered in silver on the spine, top edge dyed red; an excellent copy with the unclipped dustwrapper rubbed at the extremities, with trifling surface loss near the centre of the spine, and light stains and offsetting to the rear panel. 'Translated from the Russian by Dmitri Nabokov in collaboration with the author'; the three-page foreword by the author is new to this edition.


Invitation to a Beheading is a novel by Russian American author Vladimir Nabokov. It was originally published in Russian in 1935-1936 as a serial in Contemporary Notes (Sovremennye zapiski), a highly respected Russian émigré magazine. In 1938 the work was published in Paris, with an English translation following in 1959. The English version was translated by Nabokov's son, Dmitri Nabokov, under the author's supervision.
