by GORDON, Robert

Condition: See description

London: Royal Geographical Society, 1885. 40 pages. Plus two fold-out maps, measuring approximately 12.25 x 7.25 inches (31 x 8.5cm) and 17.25 x 19.25 inches (44 x 49cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Gordon provides a scholarly dissertation endeavoring to elucidate longstanding questions surrounding the Irrawady river and its true sources. He dissects several perspectives in the passionate debate - whether or not the Sanpo, which flowed on the northern side of the Himalayas through Tibet, constituted the head-waters of the Irawadi or the Brahmaputra. Drawing on references from ancient manuscripts for evidence and clarification, and comparing them with his own survey results, meticulously gathered while living in Burma and employed 18 years as leading engineer in charge of river works in the vincinity, Gordon also produces a sketch map to illuminate his theory. A remarkably thorough analysis refering to old Chinese, Tibetan, and Burmese sources and maps, D'Anville's maps, and those of Wilcox and Walker. . First Edition.
