About This Item

Slipcase solid, with light scuffing and corner wear.. 2 vols. Off-white cloth with tan paper dust jackets, held in slipcase of green paper over cloth and boards, with label matching jacket. Volume 1: Text. XIV, 222 pp., plus black and white plates with 590 illustrations, color frontispiece. Vol. 2: Plates 591-1478, black and white, with 888 illustrations, color frontispiece. Heavy set. A standard two-volume reference work for many years, this edition "is about a third longer than the Lists of 1932 and 1936, and is the first to contain a wealth of illustrations, arranged in chronological and systematic order, thus giving the volumes an encyclopaedic character." (dj) The first volume contains the text, plus the first 500 illustrations, while the second contains the rest of the illustrations, for a total of 1478, as well as indexes. A useful resource indeed.
