Heritage Press, NY [1966]. Hard Cover. xxiv, 542 p., b/w text illus., 12 color plates, 23.5 cm. Daiches states in his Introduction that "even though it is conceded that this novel lacks the deeper inward quality of the best of the Scottish novels, it does succeed quite remarkably in creating the atmosphere of combined suspicion and pageantry, of national exuberance and personal ambition, of merry England and court intrigue, of aesthetic sensitivity and physical brutality, which is peculiarly Elizabethan." Red cloth stamped in gold; a fine, clean copy in slightly scuffed slipcase. Another copy, the same, with Sandglass. stock#23374x.
