A century ago, Browne was well known as a travel writer, humorist, essayist and government servant. In 1853, as a confidential agent for the Treasury Department, he was assigned the task of ferreting out the misdeeds of federal office-holders in the nation's outposts. Extracts from Browne's witty, humorous, and often satirical government reports enliven this biography of a builder and reformer of the West.
