London - Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1831 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A complete set and first edition of this historical novel from the 1830s. First Edition. Complete in three volumes. Bound without any half titles but no collation available for this very rare novel, so may well not be called for, other copies seem similarly lacking. Thomas Colley Grattan (1792 - 4 July 1864), was an Irish writer. Born in Dublin, he was educated for the law, but did not practise. He wrote a few novels, including The Heiress of Bruges (4 volumes, 1830); but his best work was Highways and Byways, a description of his Continental wanderings, of which he published three series. He also wrote a history of the Netherlands and books on America. He was for some time British Consul at Boston, U. S. Condition: In half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, rubbed in places. Some chipping to the spine labels. Internally, firmly bound. Generally clean with some scattered spots prominent to the first and last few pages. Copperplate ink signature to titlepage of volume I, dated 1831. Bookplates have been removed from the front pastedowns, leaving some tearing. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Description:
London: Richard Bentley, 1843. From the library of Mary Lowell Putnam with her signature. She was an American author and the sister of James Russell Lowell. Mary Lowell Putnam's son died in the American Civil War and she established a library in his honor at the National Veterans Home in Dayton Ohio. The library was founded with books from her library of which this is one. It has a bookplate with her signature and the name Putnam Library embossed into the leather spine. There are no further ex-libris markings. The Putnam Library was dispersed during renovation of the Home following her death.
