About This Item
New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc, 1965. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to. Stated first edition. With a preface by Simone de Beauvoir. ix, 117. Quarter bound in green cloth with cream cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine. Numerous B&W photos throughout. Some spotting to boards, rubbing and bumping to spine ends. Dust jacket is price clipped, stain to front at head, damp staining to spine, creasing and wear to spine ends, a few short tears at spine head and head of rear cover, sunning to edges. This magnificent volume offers a glowing record of a great writer, of a city he loved, and of a literary epoch that came to an end with the outbreak of World War II. In a sequence of photographs taken in 1938 by distinguished French photographer Gisele Freund, interspersed with views of Paris taken in the thirties, and portraits of Joyce's friends and contemporaries, a man and his milieu come vividly alive.
