Early monograph on the oeuvre of African American photographer James Van Der Zee who over the course of six decades documented the social history of Harlem where he had his studio: "The most comprehensive survey of Afro-American life in Harlem, viewed from the camera lens of a resident photographer, may be seen in the work of James Van Der Zee" (p. 9).
