London: Macmillan and Co., 1940. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5.5". None. A first edition of British author and literary editor Naomi Royde-Smith's novel. This first edition of Naomi Royde-Smith's 'Jane Fairfax' was an experimental work that interwove characters created by Jane Austen, Royde-Smith, and the two authors themselves, serving as a prequel to Austen's novel 'Emma'. Naomi Royde-Smith was the first female literary editor of the Westminster Gazette, an influential Liberal London newspaper, and published many novels celebrated for their examination of the lives of women. First edition. An engaging and unique work, Royde-Smith's 'Jane Fairfax' serves as a bridge between two important figures of literary history, In the publisher's original cloth binding, without dustwrapper. Externally, generally very smart, with handling marks to the boards, some shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, and some fading to the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound, strained in places. The pages are bright and clean, with only some age-toning. Some chipping to the bottom of the text block, not affecting the text.
