New York: Japan Society, 1913. First edition. Hardcover. Orig. thick boards and cloth. Very good. 52 pages. 32 x 26 cm, twenty-four plates, all but two are in full-color -- latter are lithographs on mounted vellum stock. An early appreciation and retrospective of the master artists of the Ukiyoe school --Harunobu, Kiyomitsu, Toyonobu, Masanobu, et al .Gookin notes, "They represent a plebeian art which was not a spontaneous upgrowth from the soil, but, so to speak, a down-growth or offshoot from an old and highly developed art of aristocratic lineage. Notable lenders to the exhibit were Samuel Isham, The Estate of Francis Lathrop and Howard Mansfield; indeed,they were the major American collectors at that time. Limited edition, copy 209 of 1000 printed by DeVinne. Clean and very fresh internally, slight bump front cover corners.
