Tokyo: Published by K. Ogawa [printed by C. B. Woodward, St. Louis], 1893. First Edition. String Binding. Good. K. Ogawa. First printing, folio size. K. Ogawa (1860-1929), an innovative Japanese photographer known for his portraiture and masterful use of collotype, presents examples of costumes in Japan prior to the Meiji Restoration in the 1860s; his photographs depict the traditions of an old Japan, taken when Japan was quickly industrialising and adopting Western technology and means of production. The costumes are beautiful and rich in detail, with attention to accuracy and aesthetics, each with a caption explaining the fashion and history of each piece.

We are offering both volumes, "Japanese Costumes" and "Military Costumes" together as a set; both are the first edition of Ogawa's series of photographs.

___DESCRIPTION: "Japanese Costumes": Cardstock covers with light green silk ties, brown lettering and two black-and-white illustrations against a light blue and white floral pattern on the front cover, rear cover in light blue with illustrations in white, seventeen black-and-white photographs with captions throughout; folio size (13.5" by 10.25").

"Military Costumes": Cardstock covers with light green silk ties, brown lettering and a black-and-white illustration against a light blue and white floral pattern on the front cover, rear cover light blue, fifteen black-and-white photographs with captions throughout; folio size (13.5" by 10.25").

___CONDITION: Volumes are good only due to the condition of the wraps; the interior pages and photographs are overall clean, collated complete; both volumes with intact but loose binding, soiling and wear to the silk ties and covers, with damp-staining to the covers and first and last pages, but interior pages are clean and bright, "Japanese Costumes" with a small piece of tape to the front cover's fore-edge. Although the outer covers have some wear and soiling, the photographs are clean and bright, an excellent example of early Japanese fashion and photography.

___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

Tokyo: K. Ogawa [printed by C. B. Woodward, St. Louis], 1893. First edition, 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [4] plus 17 plates; [4] plus 15 plates; the 32 photographs by K. Ogawa, under the direction of Ko-yu-kai; original illustrated cardstock covers with original silk ties largely perished; covers lightly soiled with occasional wrinkles, very slight dampstaining, not affecting images; overall a good, complete set. Ogawa (1860-1929) was "a pivotal figure in early Japanese photography. He adapted cutting-edge Western technology in photo-printing processes to produce numberous half-tone and collotype publications which transformed the market which had previously concentrated on the more expensive souvenire albums. "Ogawa's publications were also instrumental in introducing Japanese art and culture to a mass international audience. He built one of the most successful photographic businesses in late-Meiji Japan. He opened his first portrait studio in Tomioka, Gumma Prefecture, in 1877."
