Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Jemima Stehli". Her nude self-portraits and striptease-performances. Stehli appears in most of the photographs (she is a very attractive woman), but like Vanessa Beecroft, with whom she is often compared, also uses other models. Her most famous work, "Strip" (1999/2000), is beautifully presented here. "Many of these compositions address the Lacanian affirmation, 'I see myself looking at myself'. In the series of photographs entitled 'Strip', she invited a group of male critics, including Adrian Searle and Matthew Collings, to pose with her. We see them sitting against colored backgrounds, illuminated by studio lights, and with the trigger of the camera in their hands" (Stella Santacatterina). So that's who those nerdy-looking men are, eminences in the world of art, who have (to their credit) agreed to take part in photographic-performances that realize Stehli's Hegelian/Lacanian "triad": The subject, the object, and the gaze. The latter transforms the first two, the result being something completely new. Or in mathematical terms, 1 + 1 = 3. During sex, all of us fantasize. Our fantasies are voyeuristic: We are looking at ourselves looking at having sex either with the person presently engaged or with someone else altogether. In "After Helmut Newton", Stehli re-takes some of the most iconic images by Newton, a doubling effect that is presented as such: Both the photographer and the model are within each frame in a full-frontal portrait. Newton himself loved doubling; his most beautiful images involved mirrors, water, and their reflections. Part of his genius was to make the viewer's eyes inevitably wander from the subject to her object-reflection within the frame. Stehli is a Conceptual artist/photographer of the best kind: Her images possess a sensuous beauty, a lyrical softness around the edges, and a raw, feminine sexiness within each frame. An absolute "must-have" title for Jemima Stehli collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare copy thus. 97 plates. One of the most brilliant artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. . ISBN 1873352530.
