About This Item
Boston: H. M. Caldwell Co., 1908. First edition, 1908. Delightfully illustrated in color and printed on one side only of paper that is still unopened at the top edge (one exception where someone opened one page carefully, leaving two blanks between the printed pages). Tan cloth with color illustration mounted on the front cover, decorated endpapers, about sixty pages. Some light cover soil, spine head chipped, good hinges, some rubbing to upper edge of book, clean pages with some very light finger soil to a few pages, no names or other markings. Story of a Japanese doll with unrequited love for a blonde, blue-eyed Caucasian doll. The Japanese doll finds happiness when he returns home to Japan to be with his own kind, rather than with in a land "where folks were so benighted" (unenlightened). The book first seems to support stereotypes and then exposes them for what they really are. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
