St Marylebone Society Publications, London, 1961. First Edition. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Very Good Condition. St Marylebone Society Publication No. 4; Scattered throughout the cathedrals and parish churches, the colleges and country houses of England, are the works of the sculptor John Bacon. Famous in his own day, he is now almost forgotten, though he was a fine sculptor, one of the first Royal Academicians and the protégé and friend of George III. For twenty-five years of well-earned and well-established success, he lived and worked at 17, Newman Street, in the south-east corner of St. Marylebone. From his workshop there came the nation's marble tributes to her heroes; he modelled the features of the statesmen, soldiers and scholars of his day; he designed and executed statues and adornments for the new buildings that were rising throughout the country; there he carved hundreds of monuments to humbler people whose kinsfolk mourned them. Indeed, his work marks the apogee of the monumentalist's work in England. The passage of time, changes in taste and fashion, have almost obliterated all memory of his career as dust has overlain the products of his chisel. Yet he deserves to he remembered, both as an artist and a man. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 47 pages. minor mark to rear cover. no Dust Jacket as published.. Previous owner's book-plate laid in.
