About This Item

Anton Doll (In Kommission den...), Wien, 1805. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 429 pages plus 3 pages advertising plus folded map (complete). In German throughout. Teutonic font. A book to bring shivers of delight to any lover of old books. Cotton rag paper. Three title pages. The title quoted is of the third. The first is as: "Bibliothek der neuesten und interessantesten Reisebeschreibungen./line/ Zwen und zwanzigster Band, enthält: John Reise in das Innere von Südafrika"/ line/ Wien, 1805. In commission ben Anton Doll." Second is as: "Archiv der neuesten und interssantesten Reisebeschreibungen./ line/ Zebnter Band, enthält: John Barrow's neue Reise in das Innere von Südafrika./ line/ Wien, 1805. In commission ben Anton Doll." This page has a stamped emblem: Habsburg Imperial Crest with leitmotif: Litomericensis sig Gymnasii Regii" showing possible ownership by this Czech academy. The front pastedown has a serene ex-libris plate showing previous ownership by Edna and Frank Bradlow, the esteemed Africana collectors and specialists. Included: correspondence regarding this copy, between the Africana Library in Johannesburg and Frank Bradlow in Cape Town. A much owned but comfortable and contented copy. The boards are plain, resolute. They are much worn, scuffed and marked all about. The spine too, has wear. Both the boards and spine are stead and sure. The paper is healthy. Untrimmed. The two illustrations are on blue paper. The pages are clean, clear, elderly, benevolent, worthy, more than competent, eager even, thrilling. A bibliophile's book indeed!! fk.
