About This Item
New York, New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1979. First Printing, 1979 . Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Volume itself has a white cloth cover with gold lettering on brown on the spine. Dust jacket is protected in an archival quality cover. Dust jacket not price-clipped. The fame of Josiah Gregg rests chiefly on his classic account of the Santa Fe Trail, Commerce of the Prairies (l844). This was a groundbreaking work on the American Southwest. Six years after its publication, Gregg died. Yet little was known of Gregg, the man, until his newly discovered notebooks, diaries, and letters were first published in the 1940's by Paul Horgan. In the present volume, Mr. Horgan presents a revised version of the biographical portrait and adds an analysis of Commerce of the Prairies. A very nice copy.
