About This Item

1853 1st ed Erskine Journal of Cruise Pacific Islands Tonga Fiji Polynesia MAP

John Erskine was an important 19th-century officer in the Royal Navy who is best remembered for his appointment on the HMS Havannah in Australia. While aboard the ship, he toured a number of South Pacific islands including Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, New Hebrides, and New Caledonia. The events of this voyage were published in 1853 under the title 'Journal of a Cruise' in which Erskine describes the native people groups, island life, canoe travel and fishing, costumes and clothing, landscapes and geography, and much more.

This rare first edition is illustrated with engravings in chromolithograph and monochrome colors as well as folding map of the ship's route.
