London. 1853. 8vo. vi, (1), errata slip, 488pp. Chromolitho frontispiece, 3 further chromolitho plates, all with tissue guards, 3 uncoloured plates, folding map, text illus. Later half calf, marbled boards Spine in six compartments with raised bands, gilt lettering, rules and motifs, leather label to spine. All edges marbled. New endpapers. Occasional marginal light foxing to plates. Short closed tear to attachment of map. A handsome volume.
John Elphinstone Erskine (1806 - 1887) British Naval Officer and Liberal MP. "In February 1848 Erskine was appointed to the Havannah as senior officer on the Australian station. Soon after his arrival Erskine made a tour of Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, the New Hebrides, the Loyalty Islands and New Caledonia between 25 June and 7 October 1849. With experience of naval anti-slavery operations in the West Indies and the effects of European penetration in the Pacific, he joined the Aborigines Protection Society and became a parliamentary leader of the influential lobby working for the Pacific Islanders Protection Act of 1872."
