About This Item
Quarto. Continuous pagination, 487 [1] 8p. [the entire diary of Provost Marshall General Patrick of the Army of the Potomac at the Library of Congress. It documents his role in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, the Maryland Campaign, the Battle of Gettysburg, operations along the Rapidan River, Va; Battle of Cold Harbor, Va; Siege of Petersburg and the entry of Union troops into Va. The diary was here transcribed for Wilton P. Moore completely along with 8 pages from an envelope with Patrick's papers in an envelope in the collection. While Wilton P. Moore has written on the subject ( "Union Provost Marshals in the Eastern Theater," Military Affairs, XXVI (1962), 120-126.), his original work required him to have access to the entire diary and a graduate student transcribed the entire diary along with the previously unknown 8 pages and here is the original transcript. Bound in full black buckram, each page is pristine and some minor typographic corrections in pencil and a few cross reference the original manuscript which is at the Library of Congress. While David S. Sparks wrote a marvelous book on the diary [Inside Lincoln's Army; the diary of Marsena Patrick, 1964), there are incredible day to day details which he chose to omit. Here are the accounts ranging from very personal accounts to military aspects that illuminate some of the issues at both the command level as well as the problem of desertions (at Gettysburg during Pickett's charge, he had to drive those fleeing back to their positions).
