About This Item

Rome: Bourlie, 1817. Hardcover. Very good condition. The third part of Volume IV of Uggeri's monumental work on classical architecture, this part on the Corinthian order, with 30 beautiful copper engraved plates (some folding) with clear impression marks in margins.

The Corinthian order is the last of the 3 major classical orders, following the Doric and Ionic. The Corinthian, whose name derives from the Greek city of Corinth, is the most ornate characterized by slender columns topped with capitals decorated with scrolls and acanthus leaves.

Plates include examples from: the Corinthian temple at Jackli (sic)-- Jakli in modern day Turkey; the bas relief from the Parthenon; the Temple of Apollo; Salonica; the Coliseum; Vitruvius' rendering of the order; Temple of Jupiter; Temple of Vesta; friezes on the Arch of Titus; Baths of Diocletian; the Pantheon; and more.

Oblong small folio, frontispiece, 8pp preface, 30 plates. Modern protective basic binding, three quarter dark green with red buckram. Plates are very bright and clean, all edges uncut. Text printed in French & Italian. OCLC: 983481767.
