Con fotografie in bianco e nero. Cm 18,5x27. pp. 208. Nuovo (New). Prima edizione Steidl (First Steidl Edition).

Description:
Tokyo: Parole-sha, 1980. Near fine in stapled photo-illustrated wrappers. Scarce.. First Edition. Stapled quarto. The third of four volumes of Keizo Kitajima's Photo Mail from Okinawa, published to coincide with his show at Daido Moriyama's Camp Gallery and predating Kitajima's work in book form. This gritty magazine, fully-illustrated after black-and-white photos on glossy paper, characterizes the evolution of Japanese photography from out of the Provoke era. While Kitajima retains some of Provoke's hallmarks, his emphasis is more on people and less on abstraction. His images of a seedy Okinawa evoke a Punk, or even Hip Hop, sensibility, forming the genesis of the New York work for which he is best known.

Description:
Tokyo: Hakuya Shobo, 1982. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/near fine. Hardbound quarto in dustwrapper. Unpaginated volume of black and white photographs capturing some of the mystery and gritty underground street life of the city of New York in the early 1980's. Book contans 140 photographs in all. The cover features a now quite famous photograph of Mick Jagger in jaunty hat. Book has some light foxing to preliminary pages, some light shelfwear to bottom edge of boards, else a bright, clean near fine copy in just short of fine unclipped dustwrapper. Book comes with the rare tan obi. Very nice example of what has become one of the more sought after "New York" photobooks.

Description:
Tokyo & New York: Byakuya Shobo,, 1982. A street killer in broad daylight First edition, first printing, in the first issue wraparound band, without mention of the Ihei Kimura Book prize. Kitajima spent six months in New York City, capturing contrasting portraits of decadence and destitution: the famous faces of Mick Jagger and Madonna appear between photographs of homelessness, police arrests, and workers hurrying towards daybreak shifts. Kitajima was a student of Daido Moriyama, who praised him as "a street killer in broad daylight" (quoted by Merola). In 1976 they set up an experimental photography space together in Shinjuku, the gritty Tokyo district that shaped both of their styles. Quarto. Original dark grey boards, spine lettered in red and white, front covered lettered in red and relief on brown ground, grey endpapers. With dust jacket and wraparound band. Black and white photography throughout. Text by Kazuo Nishii in Japanese, interview with Kitajima by Akira Suei in English. A few spots of…
