London: John Lane The Bodley Head Limited, 1930. Hardcover. xi, 254p., publisher's ads, illustrations as called for (on inserted coated paperstock); first edition hardbound in red cloth boards gilt. Covers are handling-soiled and there is extraordinarily pervasive foxing, large blotches marring all edges (even tinted top edge is very blotched) and margins of virtually every leaf within. Front hinge is sound but rear is weak, and rear pastedown shows traces of pocket removal, ergo an ex-library copy though we see no other sign either external or within. Front pastedown bears an unobjectionable bookplate, one belonging to zoologist Charles Atwood Kofoid (1865-1947). Narrator Hives, no stranger to the back-countries of two continents, mounted military expeditions for Britain, the whilst collecting information on rituals; he himself impressed locals with his own ju-ju (he was a skilled prestidigitationist).
