JUDGMENT EVE STORIES

by Harwood. H. C

  • Used
  • Hardcover
London: Constable & Co., 1924. Medium blue cloth, decorated and lettered in red. Some darkening, but a very good copy, in quite spine-tanned dust jacket with a couple tiny chips and two internally mended edge tears. Publisher's promotional card laid in. First edition, in what is most likely the primary binding - some copies appear in red boards. A collection of a dozen stories, many of them partaking of macabre or fantastic elements. Harwood contributed war verse to several of the standard Great War anthologies (see Reilly) and edited editions of Jules Verne. Otherwise, this seems to be his chief published work. OCLC/World cat locates only nine copies. Not in Bleiler, though it certainly should be.

Description:
1862 Japanese Woodblock Print Shaka Hasso Snake Demon Samurai Color Illustrated

A rare, 19th-century Japanese woodblock print of 'Shaka Hassou Yamato Bunko." "Shaka Hassou Yamato Bunko" is a biography of Buddha written by Mantei Oga and illustrated by Ichiyousai Toyokuni. Buddhism originated in Northern India, or present-day Nepal where the historical Buddha (Prince Siddhartha, Gautama Buddha), was born and lived. When Buddhism arrived in Japan, Siddhartha became known in Japan as Shaka or Shakamuni. Stories of Shaka's life were commonly told through selecting eight events to represent his life. This 'Shaka Hassou,' was aimed at the general populace, using the "eight phases" as a device to teach the important points of Shaka's life as well as a means of entertainment.
This rare 1862 edition is written in the typical handwritten column format with illustrations of snakes, battles, samurai, courtesans, demons, and more!

WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
