With illustrations in the text andvignette titles. Joseph Marie Eugne Sue (20 January 1804 3 August 1857). His naval experiences supplied much of the materials of his first novels, which were composed at the height of the Romantic movement of 1830. He was strongly affected by the Socialist ideas of the day, and these prompted his most famous works, the anti-Catholic novels: Les Mystres de Paris and Le Juif Errant, which were among the most popular specimens of the roman-feuilleton. Le Juif Errant, or The Wandering Jew, was a serially published novel, which attained great popularity in Paris and beyond. Paul Gavarni was the nom de plume of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier (13 January 1804, Paris November 23, 1866), a French caricaturist, born in Paris. He began life as an engineer's draughtsman, but soon turned his attention to his proper vocation as a cartoonist. He produced many illustrations for illustrated newspaper Le Charivari, but some of his bitterest and most earnest pictures appeared in L'Illustration. He also illustrated Balzac's novels, and Eugene Sue's Wandering Jew. Condition: In half leather bindings. Externally very good with just slight shelfwear,aside froma few marks to the boards. Internally generally firmly bound although strained in places, with one or two leaves working loose. Generally lovely and bright with the odd age-toned page, and generally clean aside fromintermittentinstances of light spotting. Overall: VERY GOOD..
