JULIA BRIDE's first appearance in book form had been in Vol. XVII of the New York Edition of James's works, published earlier the same year; there was no separate English edition. Per a contemporary "blurb": This is the story... of a girl so beautiful... that even women stop to admire and wonder and bow down. She has been engaged to one rather undesirable man, and when she really wishes to marry, she chooses another -- a rock-ribbed conservative. E&L lists six different bindings for this book, and this is one of the two primary ones (claret cloth blind-stamped with hearts). The volume is bright and fine, with scarcely any of the usual fading of the spine. Supino 66.1.0; Edel & Laurence A66.

The top edge is gilt. The binding is lightly bumped & rubbed. The spine is faded with the head lightly chipped & a stain to the mid-section. There is a small area of staining to the rear cover. Title, [2] leaves, 83 & [1] pages. Illustrated with 4 black-and-white plates by W. T. Smedley, including a frontispiece. The book is lightly cracked at page 56 with a blue stain to the inner margins. The bottom margins of 2 pages are very lightly stained. Very good. <p>First separate edition, first binding.
