About This Item

NEW YORK : G. P. PUTNAM'S SONS, 1895 RARE BOOK, MAROON COVER WITH GOLD DESIGN FRONT AND SPINE. FORMER LIBRARY BOOK, NORMAL WEAR FOR OLD BOOK, SHOWING NORMAL LIBRARY MARKINGS INSIDE, TIGHT, 15 CHAPTERS STARTING WITH THE ROMAN WORLD UNDER CONSTANTINE, PARENTAGE OF JULIAN, CHILDHOOD, EDUCATION, ELEVATION UNDER CAESAR. VERY NICE DETAIL OF THE PHILOSOPHER AND EMPEROR. GOOD NUMBER OF ILLUSTRATIONS AND INDEX IN BACK. Alice Gardner (26 April 1854 – 11 November 1927) was an English historian. Her publications included a history of Newnham College, Cambridge. Paganism is a term first used pejoratively in the fourth century by early Christians for people in the Roman Empire who practiced polytheism or ethnic religions other than Judaism. Julian (Latin: Flavius Claudius Julianus; 331 – 26 June 363) was Roman emperor from 361 to 363, as well as a notable philosopher and author in Greek. His rejection of Christianity, and his promotion of Neoplatonic Hellenism in its place, caused him to be remembered as Julian the Apostate by the Christian Church. A member of the Constantinian dynasty, Julian was orphaned as a child. He was raised by the Gothic slave Mardonius, who had a profound influence on him, providing Julian with literary education.
