Published in honor of the centenary of the Hocken Collections' Deed of Trust in 1907 that began with items donated by Thomas Morland Hocken to the U. of Otago, this volume catalogs 200 items from the thousands held in the collection. These include books, manuscripts, sheet music, paintings, and other documents relating to New Zealand, the Pacific, and Antarctica, from the seventeenth century to the present day, with a focus on southern New Zealand. Many of the items relate to Maori history. Essays written by those working in the collections describe Hocken and the development of the collections, and the types of items--archives and manuscripts, publications, maps and plans, music and sound, paintings and drawings, and photographs--with specific items described and shown. Strachan is a librarian at Hocken, and Tyler was curator of Pictorial Collections at the library. She now works at the Centre for New Zealand Art Research and Discovery at the U. of Auckland.
