About This Item

UK,8vo p/back,1st thus.NMINT.Unread copy.Originally published by Weidenfeld+Nicolson,1978.8vo p/back,1st thus 176pp includes map, family tree, reference notes, sources,an index and b/w photographs. No ruler has ever been so lauded and reviled by the British public as Queen Victoria's grandson,Kaiser William II.His birth in Berlin in 1859 was welcomed in London as though he were British rather than a Prussian prince;and as he grew older, the Queen granted him a succession of unprecedented titles and honours. But by 1915 he had become the most hated man in Britain, and for many people the catastrophe of 1914-18 remains 'The Kaiser's War'. Alan Palmer examines the Anglo-German background to William's life and reign, and emphasizes his changing attitudes towards Britain - a country he both admired and resented. In particular he throws new light on the clash of imperialism in the 1890's, the Kaiser's visit in 1907 and on the attitude of the British government in the 1930's towards the exiled monarch. He sets out to tell the story of the life and reign of this temperamentally insecure man who was outwardly so full of swagger and bombast - the epitome of the new, self-confident Germany.
